WALDok: A speaker dock for your iPod Nano

waldok
There are several docking stations available in the market today. Most of them come with an alarm clock that you probably don’t need and some innovative ones that you can sit on even! But nothing comes close to this one in portability and ease of use. Here’s a product that for once understands the real needs of the customer and incorporates it in the design.

Huawei IDEOS X3 and IDEOS S7 Slim tablet revealed en route to MWC launch

Huawei, the company whose name rhymes with the typical response of "who are they," has uploaded a few images to its Flickr page teasing new hardware bound for this year's Mobile World Congress. First up is the IDEOS X3, an Android handset seemingly set to provide a more budget-oriented family mate to theX5. It has two cameras, one on the front and one on the back, three Android buttons, and at least four different color options (red, blue, silver and black).
The Barcelona event will see it joined by an IDEOSS7 Slim tablet, also running Google's mobile OS, though our knowledge about that device doesn't extend any further than noting it too has a front-facing camera. Check it out after the break.

iControlPad finally available for order, shipping next week

iControlPad finally available for order, phone gamers finally get physical controls
The iControlPad hasn't been flirting with vaporware status for quite as long as Duke Nukem Forever but certainly long enough to make us wonder if we'd ever be able to use it to kick some in-game butt before we ran out of bubblegum. We've been tantalized by this formerly iPhone-exclusive adapter since way back in 2008, when it was going to be a simple case with a dock connector that would let you control those emulators with greater ease.

It's grown significantly since then, the latest version shown above -- the final version, as it happens. It's now available for order at a cost of $74.99, and we're happy to say that ditching that dock connector and going for Bluetooth has expanded support well past the iDevice crowd, including things like the Motorola Blackflip, Blackberry Touch, and the now-classic G1. However, we're told not all games and emulators will work with the thing, so your mileage may vary. First devices ship next week, so make with the clicking.

Olympus SZ-10 and 3D VR-330 superzooms announced alongside entry-level VG-110

What's your preference for getting up close to the action? 18x wide 28-504mm or 12.5x super-wide 24-300mm optical zoom? If it's the former then Olympus just announced its $249.99 (ships in March) SZ-10 ultra-zoomer pictured above, with 14 megapixel 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor, 3-inch LCD, TruPic III+ image processing, and Eye-Fi Card support. Otherwise, Oly's new £159.99 3D VR-330 for Europe dials back the zoom to 12.5x and and forgoes the newer image processing of the SZ-10 while boasting the same 14 megapixel sensor.
Both cameras pack dual-image stabilization, 720p video capture, HDMI-out (with CEC support so that it works with your TV's existing remote control), and a dynamic "3D mode" that instructs you to pan and shoot a second image that will be combined into a .MPO file suitable for playback on a 3D display. The VR-330 is also available without the 3D mode as the $199.99 VR-320 which ships Stateside in February. Bringing up the rear is an entry-level $89.99 VG-110 with 12 megapixel sensor, 2.7-inch LCD, 4x zoom, and VGA video. Look for it sometime later this month.

Pentax reveals Optio WG-1 and WG-1 GPS rugged cameras, limited edition K-5 DSLR

Who woulda thunk it? Half a year ago, finding a conventional point-and-shoot with integrated GPS was a chore, but these days, it's growing tougher and tougher to find one without it. Pentax is joining thegeotagging frenzy this evening with its Optio WG-1 GPS, a rugged 14 megapixel shooter that's waterproof up to 33 feet, shockproof in nature and engineered with a "crushproof" body that can withstand weight force of up to 220 pounds (but not another Black Eyed Peas halftime show). You'll also get integrated face detection technology, the ability to snap in sub-freezing temperatures, a 5x optical zoom lens and a 2.7-inch rear LCD. There's also a 720p movie mode, HDMI output, IR control compatibility and support for Eye-Fi's wireless SD card. It'll ship this April in black or yellow-green for $399.95, and if you're uncomfortable remembering where you took each and every photograph, the GPS-less Optio WG-1 will also be available (in black or purple) for $50 less.

In related news, the company is taking this opportunity to issue a limited edition K-5 DSLR, with this one touting a silver body, a uniquely shaped grip and shock-resistant, scratchproof glass surrounding the LCD. Outside of that, everything else about the 16.3 megapixel shooter will remain the same as it ever was, and the $1,699.95 (body only) price point is most certainly no easier to swallow. For those still sold on the idea, Pentax will also be offering a trifecta of silver prime lenses: the 21m f/3.2 AL, 40mm f/2.8 and the 70mm f/2.4. Check out Sir Silver (and the full press releases) just after the break.

"Military Grade" iPhone Case Could Probably Take a Bullet

"Military Grade" iPhone Case Could Probably Take a BulletDesigner Jon Eicher's Military Grade iPhone 4 Case looks like it may be one of the few cases whose tough looks and promises of protection might actually live up to the hype.Updated.
This one-of-a-kind $99 case, you see, is comprised of a variety of military-grade shock absorption and vibration-reducing materials (Military Standard 810-G to be precise, if that means anything to you).
"Military Grade" iPhone Case Could Probably Take a BulletSadly, if you're slobbering over this design and considering a purchase, you're too late—it's gone! There was only one in existence/for sale over at Etsy, although rumors of custom orders are flying about, should you be able to track Jon down and ask him nicely.

“K-r BONNIE PINK MODEL”: Yet Another Pentax DSLR Special Edition

Pentax seems to have a sweet spot for digital cameras with funky designs, and this time it’s the Pentax K-r that will receive a limited edition treatment. Pentax today announced [JP] the so-called K-r BONNIE PINK MODEL”, a redesigned version of the camera, which was released last year.
Bonnie Pink is the name of a fairly famous Japanese pop star.
Technically, Pentax didn’t change anything, apart from adding a boot screen that shows the singer’s logo. Buyers will get a DA L 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL BONNIE PINK MODEL lens that’s bundled with the camera.
The camera will be limited to just 100 units (price: $1,100). Pentax will start selling it next month: ask specialized online store Rinkya if you want to lay your hands on one but don’t live in Japan.

3DTV shocker! Toshiba's first glasses-free TVs selling slowly in Japan

In truly surprising news, it appears that a combination of high prices, small sizes and a somewhatquestionable viewing experience have caused Toshiba's new GL1 line of glasses-free 3DTVs to sell more slowly than the company expected. In their first month of availability the 20-inch set, priced at 240,000 yen ($2,940), sold around 500 units while its 12-inch cousin sold even less than that, despite projections both would sell at least 1,000 units. Don't think Toshiba's letting its hard work go the way of the old Sony XEL-1 OLED TVs just yet, as we saw at CES, it's still committed to bringing autostereoscopic 3D in larger screen sizes to the masses despite the potential technological hurdles like providing more viewing angles for the 3D effect.

I Really Really Hope This NoteSlate Paper Tablet Is Real

I Really Really Hope This NoteSlate Paper Tablet Is RealThe NoteSlate is a 13-inch e-ink tablet that mimics paper. You can jot down notes with the stylus and store them digitally—so simple, yet so awesome. I'd never buy a Moleskine again. Coming out in June 2011 for $100
I'm going to warn myself that this is probably too good to be true. But please, oh please, let this be real! The NoteSlate is supposed to come in various colors, lasts over 180 hours in battery life and can even listen to mp3s for some reason. I've been wanting something like the NoteSlate for a while now, let's hope it's real (and good). [NoteSlate via Kottke]

Motorola Xoom coming to Best Buy on February 24th, HTC Thunderbolt on the 14th

We're already fatigued of reporting launch dates for devices announced at this year's CES -- it seems like each one has had at least four different potential release points -- but when you get one of Best Buy's official Facebook pages blabbing about when the Moto Xoom and HTC Thunderbolt will be arriving... well, you sum up the strength to do it one more time. Contrary to earlier insider leaks pinning the Xoom to a February 17th launch, Best Buy is now promising to have the vanguard of the Honeycomb tablet revolution on February 24th. That's exactly a week later than our earlier info, so perhaps somebody somewhere decided to push things back a bit. We have no doubt, however, that Motorola is nearly ready with its slate -- there have been plenty of them spotted around the Super Bowl this week. In the meantime, HTC's LTE-equipped 4.3-incher seems to have finally settled down on Valentine's Day as its time of reckoning, a day after the similarly sized Inspire 4G hits AT&T.

The Dell Streak 7, Or: 10 Ways to Not Make an Android Tablet

The Dell Streak 7, Or: 10 Ways to Not Make an Android TabletIf it was possible to drown in plastic and silicon, we would so choke to death on all the Android tablets coming soon. This is a guide to not making one. The Dell Streak 7 followed it precisely.
The Dell Streak 7 is perhaps the last Android tablet from a major manufacturer that will follow this guide. In a couple of months, after the tablet-centric Android 3.0 becomes de rigeur for any decent producer of Android-powered knick-nacks and bobbles, we'll enter a new phase of Android tablets where across-the-field genericness is offset by the taste and utility of Honeycomb. (In fact, I hope manufacturers don't take too deeply to differentiating by tweaking Honeycomb, since they've proven over and over again Google has better designers than they do.) But that doesn't mean we won't see plenty more tablets from othermanufacturers that follow the template set out by the Streak 7:
1. Use a middling, low-res screen with crummy viewing angles.
2. Use out-of-date software designed for a phone.
3. Halfway cover up said out-of-date software with a custom interface that is only mediocre—like covering a tiny face stretched across a giant head with a ski mask made out of wet flannel.
4. Make something with the heart of a cheetah—the Tegra 2—occasionally respond so slowly that a crippled turtle drowning in a meteor-sized ball of laffy taffy would move with greater speed.
5. Make sure that your pokes are ignored at least one quarter of the time you try to touch something on the screen.
6. Get rid of the search button without a good reason. (Was there not enough space? I do not think so.)
7. Require a two-year contract to buy it, tethering its money-draining corpse to you long after it's obsolete.
8. Turn the apps screen into a version of Minesweeper called, "App or Crapware?" (I am looking at you, BrainPOP.)
9. Design a paperback-sized device—that is still almost as much phone as tablet—around the idea that it'll primarily be held in a landscape position.
10. Pull all calling functions out of your giant phone-tablet.
If you absolutely must pick up a 7-inch Android tablet immediately, the Samsung Galaxy Tabis better at this very moment. The pickle is that the Streak has better guts and will one day be updated to Android 3.0, which will likely obliterate the software problems, while we've heard that the Galaxy Tab may not ever be updated to 3.0. (That said, Honeycomb won't do anything to fix the Streak 7's mediocre screen, which is totally inferior to the Tab, and we hate the idea of purchasing anything predicated on the hopes or promises of a software update, which is only slightly less risky than purchasing a lottery ticket.)
It's $200 with a two-year contract on T-Mobile, after a $50 rebate. Or you can buy it off-contract for $450. Given the flood of Android tablets that are in the pipe though, I'd very much just wait. Either for another Android tablet, or for this one to get 3.0.
